Life Beyond the Port of Beirut

Album & Drum Triggering System

This thesis was submitted in 2024 for a Master’s degree in Electronic Music Composition at the University of Louisville.

It comprises two parts: an original music album with 8 instrumental tracks; and a drum triggering system (designed in Max for Live) which offers another tool for drummers to trigger live samples and electronics through their acoustic drum set.

Life Beyond the Port of Beirut

Drum Triggering System in Action:

The drum set is the only percussion instrument in this video. The extra percussion sounds you hear are produced by the drum triggering system. The system captures the audio signal from piezo contact microphones attached to the individual instruments of the drum set and then transfers the signal into MIDI data through Max for Live. This MIDI data can then trigger virtual instruments or samples in Ableton Live.
